Journaling vs. Diary Writing

The terms journal and diary seem to be used interchangeably. Though Journaling and Diary Writing both share similar features such as writing in a personal notebook, they do have several differences.
The three differences between the journaling and diary writing:
1 – Diary writing is a free form way of documenting writer day-to-day experiences. While journaling is a more organized and directed style of writing with journaling prompts and exercises.
2 – Diary writing focuses on details about events. Journaling is a step further by analyzing the thoughts that accompany the events.
3 – Diary writing has no particular agenda. Journaling is more intentional. It helps with self development and growth.
Whichever writing technique you choose, it can help you with emotional well-being. As quoted by Lee Wise – "Journaling is paying attention to the inside for the purpose of living well from the inside out."

What is Journal Therapy?

Journal therapy is a form of expressive writing that has therapeutic benefits. It is different from regular writing in a diary because journal therapy is guided by prompts with clear purposes during the writing process. It has shown many medical benefits - psychologically by reducing the anxiety attacks and physically e.g. lesser asthmatic attacks or reduced chronic pelvic pain.

While writing in a journal, the person will require to find the right words to express their emotions or events lingering in their minds. This will lead them to utilize the left brain and subsequently allows them to become creative. The creativity acquired while jotting down their thoughts will stimulate more ideas to find solution to their issues. The more they write, they become free from emotional baggage. They will gain clarity and true understanding on the issue experienced.

The session can be organized individually or in a group with presence of a journal therapist. It is suitable for those who undergo trauma recovery, relationship challenges, grief, addiction, anxiety disorder and some medical illnesses such as non-conclusive chronic pain (somatic pain). However, journal therapy can NEVER replace medical treatment. This therapy is aimed to complement whichever medical treatment an individual is undergoing.

Zorra Designs is aimed to assist the community to achieve emotional well-being through journaling. Our debut product – The Jasmine Journal was designed with an original cover art. It is an exclusive, one-of-a- kind, limited edition journal. The exclusivity is to encourage people to treasure their journaling practice. There is no perfect way to journal but most important is to start and never stop.

The Zorra Designs Project

When two writers sit together, there's nothing more exciting than to discuss writing projects or books.

Paloma and Dr Haliza, founders of Zorra Designs are expert multi-taskers.

Apart from juggling normal duties, Paloma is also an award-winning photographer, content creator and coach.

Dr Haliza is a published writer. Journaling has helped them with emotional healing and life organizing tremendously.

One day while having coffee at a local Mamak stall, they discussed on how to encourage Malaysians to journal as they believe journaling is the key to productivity and healthy minds.

Dr Haliza has been journaling since she was 12. She suggested to begin by creating beautiful journals. So they both worked on an original cover design inspired by the Jasmine flower.
